In early days of photography, stereo images were all the rage. In the late 1940s, color 3D became the latest trend when David White introduced the 35mm Stereo Realist® camera and Red Button viewer. Stereo photography required cameras with two lenses separated by the average distance between human eyes. Viewers produced the 3D effect by allowing users to see the left image only with the left eye -- right image only by the right eye.

In today’s world, we (and you) can create the third dimension using digital photo tools. Our examples were made from ordinary photos -- single images from digital cameras or scanned images of prints from any camera. These images can be viewed in both contemporary and antique viewers.

You can turn your favorite photos into stereo views that can be printed and viewed in 3D in stereo viewers and even viewed on your computer screen . Click on Do it Yourself” below to learn how.
